PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners working within a Ward Committee or Local Government structure, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to one's job. The completion of the standard will also add value to individuals who are seeking to develop a career pathway in local government and administration.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing and explaining legislative provisions and guidelines relating to the establishment and functioning of a ward committees.
  • Describing ward committee membership, composition and roles.
  • Describing and explaining the process to nominate and elect the members of a ward committee.

    The efficacy of Council resolutions to establish Ward Committees are discussed with examples.

    The authority to make rules for convening meetings, nominate and elect ward counsellors is identified and explained in the context of Ward Committee functioning.

    Typical candidate nomination and election procedures are described and evaluated in relation to Ward Committee functioning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Criteria and principles regarding representation on Ward Committees are evaluated and explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Checklists for organising, and holding and running Ward Committees are developed to ensure that correct procedures are adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The criteria for the selection and assigning of portfolios to ward Committee members are identified and evaluated to ensure effective nominations.
