PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is designed to encourage healthy life and work competencies that increase individual effectiveness and benefit both employer and worker. It introduces some theoretical issues and addresses a broad base of knowledge about HIV/AIDS that will enable learners to be informed and caring workers.

People credited with this unit standard will be able to:

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the nature of HIV and AIDS and its effects on the human system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The terms HIV and AIDS are explained at a basic level of understanding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The way in which the immune system works is explained with reference to the role of antibodies, and an indication is given as to how the Human Immune-deficiency Virus attacks the immune system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The effects of HIV infection are explained including the ability of infected persons to perform work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The importance of lifestyle changes to boost the immune system are discussed, with reference to diet and stress management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The stages of the disease are outlined with an example of what happens at each stage from infection with HIV to full-blown AIDS and death.

    6. The chances of a person surviving with AIDS are discussed with reference to the latest views on medication and the cost of drugs.

    Demonstrate knowledge of HIV transmission, and practices to reduce the risk of contamination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The effect of body fluids on transmission of the HI virus is outlined at a basic level of understanding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Risk taking behaviours linked to the transmission of HIV are described and discussed, and reference made to intravenous drug use, sexual practices and blood spills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The role of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the transmission of the HI virus is described, and an indication is given of how untreated STDs greatly increase the risk of transmission. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The advantages and disadvantages of a number of risk minimisation practices are debated, and recommendations made with reference to condoms, lubricant, needles and syringes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The ways in which mother to child transmission can occur are listed and the implications of pregnant women having unprotected sex are indicated for both the mother and the unborn child. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Interpersonal skills that help to reduce the risk of HIV infection are demonstrated in terms of assertive communication, negotiation and decision-making.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The importance of pre and post-test counselling is explained and the implications of HIV testing for an individual are discussed in terms of making a personal decision to take an AIDS test. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Fears and common misunderstandings about the transmission of HIV/AIDS are described in the context of the work place, and suggestions made as to what the learner himself/herself could do to create a caring situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The benefits of a Company AIDS policy are discussed with reference to the reduction of prejudice and discrimination against infected persons, and the removal of stigma from the disease. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. An explanation is given of the role of HIV/AIDS prevention and wellness programmes, and an indication given as to how to access such programmes.
