PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard was designed to assist learners who are about to embark on careers, or learners who are faced with a work change, to explore the world of work and select a work path or type of employment including self employment. It is intended for the unemployed, out of school youth and employees faced with a change in employment status. It could be included as an elective in any workplace qualification.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Investigating possible employment opportunities in own area.
  • Investigating the requirements for specific work opportunities.
  • Matching own personal profile to career and labour market opportunities.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding the process of accessing work/income-generating opportunities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is employment in the formal and informal sectors including self employment.

    Investigate possible employment opportunities in own area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information about work and employment opportunities is gathered from a variety of sources. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sources include, but are not limited to, Labour centers, recruitment agencies, labour brokers, employment agencies, career resource centers libraries, national, regional and local newspapers, local bulletin boards, personal contacts, Internet and networking.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Work opportunities are classified in terms of categories of work type of employment and the skills required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways of accessing employment opportunities are identified with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways of accessing employment include, but are not limited to, shadowing, volunteerism, internships, learnerships, self work creation and income generating opportunities.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Investigate the requirements for specific work opportunities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Entry requirements and training needed for a particular career or type of employment are investigated for three different fields or types of employment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Practitioners/employees in a selected field or type of work are interviewed to ascertain the reality of the selected type of work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Formal and informal learning institutions/providers accessible to the learner are discussed in terms of the education and training opportunities available from each site. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Match own personal profile to career and labour market opportunities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ways of determining labour market demands are investigated in relation to own situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different work environments are investigated and a choice of occupation is made based on own profile and preferences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal circumstances that could affect an employment decision are identified and an indication is given of how these could be accommodated in a specific situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the process of accessing work/income generating opportunities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The steps in the process of securing employment or generating income are explained with reference to a specific opportunity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information from a personal profile is selected which is relevant to a specific work position or income generating activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A portfolio is compiled at a level suitable for submission to a prospective employer or sponsor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Questions to be discussed with a prospective employer or sponsor are formulated for own situation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Assessors for this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the appropriate ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
