PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform a limited range of carpentry functions under direct supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and using roof covering tools, materials and protective equipment, installing battens, purlins and underlay, installing cladding of roof structures as well as completing roof installation.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Learners will perform the basic tasks listed in this unit standard under supervision.
  • Roof sheeting and covering includes but is not limited to: Metal, non-metal materials, concrete, clay, slate, shingles (wood and asphalt), corrugated galvanised sheeting, corrugated fibre cement sheeting. Roof sheeting excludes grass and reed cladding.
  • Insulation and waterproofing materials include plastics, malthoid and polyethylenes.
