PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for persons working in, or planning entry into, the construction industry. A person accredited with this Unit Standard will be able to install various types of pattern flooring, in accordance with the industry's set standards.

This Unit Standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the construction industry by providing competence, recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The knowledge, skills and understanding demonstrated in this Unit Standard will aid in the social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    Set out complex patterns in preparation for installing a patterned floor.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Scale drawing of the floor is accurately interpreted· Frequency of patterns are identified and utilised to optimise the efficiency of the layout and installation 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Create template for pattern where appropriate 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment and tools required for installation of the patterned floor are identified, selected correctly and stored safely on site, for future use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Substrate is marked out in relation to patterns to ensure correct final pattern 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Install patterned floor.

    Pattern matching is done where required in order to ensure correct final pattern

    Flooring materials are laid out according to marked floor to ensure correct pattern in final product

    Patterned flooring is installed according set industry procedures and manufactures instructions

    Ventilation of work area is sufficient for the safe use of installation products

    Seams, joins and fills are done in accordance with industry standards

    Pattern and installation anomalies are identified and appropriate plans to overcome these are made, or anomalies are reported according to job description

    Apply finishing to new patterned flooring.

    Left over materials are dealt with according to site supervisors instructions, and safely 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Flooring is finished using manufacturer prescribed compounds and procedures and according to industry standards 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Flooring is evaluated for aesthetics and, where required remedial action is taken according to industry standards 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Client is briefed on the maintenance of the flooring in accordance with industry standards relating to maintenance, using clear communication

    Initiate clean-up and inspection of new patterned floor.

    Rubble is removed and disposed of safely, according to industry standards and according to site supervisor

    Work area is cleaned to ensure an aesthetically pleasing overall flooring product

    Work area is restored to initial state, showing that no damage was caused to client's property 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and equipment is accounted for and removed correctly and appropriately 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Supervisor is alerted to the readiness of the job for the final inspection, in a way that promotes efficiency and good communication

  • Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by a relevant ETQA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for this unit standard.
