PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
To enable a person working in the air conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation industry to:
  • Identify components used in the make-up of three-phase electrical circuits.
  • Identify the symbols used to represent these on electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Interpret three-phase circuits.
  • Construct three phase circuits.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Power supplies:
    Standard low voltage, three-phase-four-wire as used in Southern Africa.
    Loads:
    Resistive and inductive loads
    Motors and starters:
    Direct on line, Star-Delta, Part-wind motors and starters and solid state starters.
    Protection devices:
    Three-phase circuit breakers, three-phase earth leakage relays, overload protection devices, phase failure relays, phase rotation relays and over/under voltage relays.
    Electrical control panel accessories:
    Door interlocked isolators (plain and fused), neutral links, current transformers, running hour meters, Auto-off-manual selector switches
    Typical circuits:
    Circuits for 2, 4, 6 and 8 pole three-phase -single speed induction motors, including the following:
  • Fuses, circuit breakers, overloads, lock-out stops, isolators and typical controls.
  • Sequence starting arrangements via interlocks or timers.
  • Stop-start stations, multi-position switches, warning devices and meters.
  • Time clocks, delay-on and delay-off timers
  • Protection devices.
    Circuits for:
  • Heaters including control and protective devices.
  • Humidifiers.

    Any person learning towards the National Certificate in Air-conditioning, Refrigeration and Ventilation at NQF level 3 shall not work on electrical equipment or electrical control panels unless such person has been assessed competent in the unit standards on NQF levels 2 and 3 involving electrical work on such equipment or control panels and feels confident and comfortable to carry out such work.
