PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic competence in pastoral care as it is applied in a congregational context.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the basic Biblical and doctrinal principles that underlie good practice in pastoral care
  • Show an empathetic understanding of human nature in relation to people's needs
  • Apply pastoral care principles to a variety of basic situations of human need within church and community contexts

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the basic Biblical and doctrinal principles that underlie good practice in pastoral care. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Biblical: both Old Testament and New Testament; doctrinal: Church as missiological community; nature of sin; forgiveness, reconciliation, inclusion of marginalised individuals and communities.

    Specified Biblical texts can be used to show that care is a primary Christian principle.

    The outward-looking character of a missiological community can be defined in terms of its inclusive caring nature.

    Must include care of the sick and bereaved, care in basic marriage and family contexts; prevention of abuse; organisation of pastoral care; care of self.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The insights, skills and values pertinent to a selection from the specified range of pastoral care situations must be demonstrated in a practical way and reported on. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The boundaries and limits of personal competence must be described, along with simple mechanisms for referral and teamwork. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Sensitivity is shown to the culture, gender, age etc of the person in need.

    Providers of learning towards this unit standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of the relevant ETQA.
