PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners wishing to acquire the competencies of this unit standard will be domestic workers, au pairs, baby-sitters, in-home child-minders working towards a national qualification and/or will be involved in minding children. Qualifying learners are able to practice hygiene principles for babies.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing and disinfecting / "sterilising" bottles and dummies
  • Disinfect / sterilise bottles and dummies
  • Preparing and disinfecting / "sterilising" nappies and / or toys
  • Performing the post disinfecting / "sterilisation" procedures

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learner would have achieved numeracy and communication competencies at a minimum level of ABET level 2 or the equivalent. This will enable the learner to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Baby refers to a child 0 to 18 months of age
  • Equipment refers to e.g. containers with lids, chemicals, water, bottles, teats, rims, teat covers, dummies, bottle brush, liquid soap, salt, chemicals, nappies toys and microwave
  • Method refers to e.g. the cold/ chemical, the steaming and the microwave method
  • The appropriate method for sterilising / disinfecting includes but is not limited to the cold/chemical method, the steaming method using the microwave, the boiling water method
  • Necessary equipment for sterilising / disinfecting include but is not limited to the container for the sterilised items, bottles, teats, rims, teat covers, dummies, bottle brush, salt, liquid soap, bowl, microwave, container to boil the water, container to use in microwave
  • Equipment necessary for disinfecting of nappies / toys includes but is not limit to the container for the disinfecting solution, disinfecting agent, cold water, nappies, toys

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare and disinfect/ "sterilize" bottles and dummies. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Prepare refers to e.g. bottles, teats, teat covers being rinsed, washed and rubbed with dry salt on the inside and outside. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various methods for disinfecting/sterilising bottles and dummies are explained with examples of each method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The bottles, teats, teat covers and dummies are rinsed and washed according to best practice in the home. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The teats and dummies are rubbed with dry salt according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The chemical process is prepared according to manufactures instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Disinfect / sterilise bottles and dummies.

    The bottles and dummies are disinfected / sterilised according to requirements of the method chosen. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required safety measures are put in place for each method used according to home safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons why a fresh 24 hourly disinfecting / sterilisation solution needs to be prepared is explained with consequences of not preparing a fresh solution. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare to clean and disinfect / sterilise nappies and toys. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The method for cleaning and disinfecting / sterilising nappies is explained with an example of the method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The method for cleaning and disinfecting / sterilising toys is explained with an example of the method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nappies are prepared for cleaning and disinfecting / sterilising by disposing of any excess waste. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stained nappies are treated according to requirements in the home. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Toys are prepared for cleaning and disinfecting / sterilising by rinsing with warm water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The chemical process in prepared according to manufactures instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Disinfect / sterilise nappies and toys.

    The nappies and toys are disinfected / sterilised according to requirements of the chosen method.

    Hands are washed before the 'equipment/ items are removed from the container with the disinfecting/ "sterilizing" solution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The items disinfected/ "sterilized" are prepared for storing and stored according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The chemicals used are safely stored in the applicable storing area.
