PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who work in an organization that has embarked on productivity or continuous improvement initiatives. People who work in a visual performance environment will find the unit standard particularly useful.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Sort work station and reposition required articles in their designated place.
  • Shine and sweep the work station.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of standardized and continuous improvement systems.

    This unit standard will contribute towards the achievement of a National Certificate in Chemical Manufacturing at NQF Level 2. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners have no previous continuous improvement experience when starting to learn towards this unit standard.

    It will be an advantage to have acquired competence in Communication in language at ABET 4 English level.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Sort work station and reposition required articles in their designated place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Unneeded items are identified, tagged clearly, and stored in a designated holding area, and a tag record sheet is completed, according to work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. On completion of sorting, items from the holding area are discarded according to Company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Articles required in the work place are re-arranged in their designated place, as per work site signboards, colour-codes and other workplace demarcations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The criteria to determine articles that are needed and those that should be discarded are described and discussed, with reference to productivity enhancement principles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Productivity enhancement principles: effective use of time and resources, reduction of waste.

    5. The benefits of using visual systems are described, with reference to colour coding, sign boarding techniques, and demarcated storage systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The appropriate cleaning chemicals and equipment are gathered and stored in sufficient quantities, for easy access and undisturbed cleaning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cleaning technique: Shine and sweep: initial, quarterly, daily. Equipment to be cleaned: machines, tools, worktables, floors, shelf spaces, walls, pillars, ceilings, windows, etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The work place is swept and cleaned, and all equipment checked in the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Out of place items or low stock areas are noted, and the problems rectified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Technique: Five senses analysis.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Abnormalities are tagged and documented, and either corrected, or help sought from the appropriate authorities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The concepts of motion, transportation and storage waste are explained, using appropriate examples and possible solutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. The reasons for shining and sweeping the work station are explained with reference to equipment maintenance, speedy detection of abnormalities, and minimization of waste. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. All forms of waste in the workstation are located through systematic observation, and recommendations are made to continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the workstation.

    Demonstrate understanding of standardized and continuous improvement systems.

    1. The structure and function of standard operating procedures and their value in the workplace are explained with reference to training and safety principles, and the standardization of work site practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The principles of work place recognition schemes are explained, and benefits to Company and workers highlighted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The processes used by the Company to identify training needs, provide training, and assess and certify workers are described, and the benefits of training for both the Company and workers, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The purpose and function of visual performance boards are described, and the information contained on the worksite boards explained. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA), for the Chemical Industry in consultation with GEN/FETQA will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators.
