PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sectors.
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Select, safely use and care for range of fixed and portable power tools

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • Safety procedures according to statutory and manufacturer requirements
  • Induction to industry
  • Basic electrical safety
  • Use of hand tools 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Power source includes pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical.
  • The range of power tools include but is not limited to drilling machines, grinders, sanders, brushes, riveters, buffs, wrenches (including impact type), saws and tacks.
  • Caring for power tools includes but is not limited to clamping, changing blades, replacing, adjustment or setting up, cleaning, lubricating and tightening.
  • Safety precautions include the use of personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection.
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to SABS, OSH Act and manufacturers specifications.

    1. The choice of power tool is selected according to the task requirement.

    2. Pre-operational check is carried out in terms of safety requirements and function. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Hazards associated with the use of power tools are recognised and necessary precautions taken according to work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Faulty and unsafe tools are identified and reported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Personal safety equipment is selected according to tool requirement. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Use fixed power tools.

    1. Fixed power tool is selected and set up according to job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Personal protective equipment applicable to the task is worn.

    3. All guards and securing mechanisms are effectively utilised in terms of job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Fixed power tools are used safely and in accordance with manufacturers specifications.

    Use portable power tools.

    1. Portable power tools are selected in accordance to the available power source.

    2. Portable power tools are set up according to job requirements.

    3. Personal protective equipment applicable to the task is worn.

    4. Portable power tools are used safely and in accordance with manufacturers specifications.

    Caring for and storing of power tools and their accessories. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Power tools are cleaned after use according to work site practices and/or manufactures specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Power tools are lubricated after use according to work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Power tools are inspected for incurred defects in accordance to work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Loose items are secured and minor defects repaired in accordance to work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Portable power tools and accessories are stored in accordance to work site procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
